Pathways

School should fit your life — not flip it upside down.

The right next step at 18 looks nothing like the right step at 38. Here's how we think about each stage, and where most people get stuck.

Age 17–22

Straight from high school

You've got time, energy, and not much committed yet. The wrong major is recoverable — the wrong amount of debt is harder.

  • Start at a community college, transfer to save 50%+ on a bachelor's.
  • Don't sleep on trades — electricians and HVAC techs out-earn many BAs by 30.
  • If you know the field, an apprenticeship can pay you to learn.

Years young, decisions ahead.
Age 23–34

First career, second thoughts

You picked something at 18, gave it a real shot, and the math isn't mathing. Time to recalibrate without starting from zero.

  • Look for credit-for-experience (CPL) — many programs grant 12–30 credits.
  • Bootcamps and certs work best when you already have transferable skills.
  • An online degree completion track can finish your bachelor's in 18 months.

Age 35+

Returning with a life

You have kids, a mortgage, a job, maybe all three. School has to fit your life — not the other way around.

  • Asynchronous online programs let you work in 30-minute slots.
  • Employer tuition assistance averages $5,250/yr — ask, even if HR didn't bring it up.
  • Grad certificates (4–6 courses) can move your title without a full master's.
